9 Tips for Successful Google Shopping: How to Get Started
Google Shopping is a free Google service that enables you to sell your products on google.com and google images. It’s an extremely powerful tool for boosting your online business or even just adding some extra revenue to your personal finances.
If you are new to google shopping, this post will teach you everything about it!
1. Sign up for Google Shopping.
first, you have to sign up for google shopping. To do this, just go to google’s Merchant Center and click on the ‘Get Started’ button in the top right corner of your screen.
2. Create a product feed.
Once you’ve signed up, Google will guide you through the process of creating a product feed. Your feed is basically just an Excel sheet with all your products listed in it and linked to their respective landing pages on your website or online store. You can create as many feeds as you want (e.g., one for each brand), but Google recommends that they be no more than 200–300 products per feed; otherwise it may take too long for Google to crawl them all which means less effective ads! The Google Merchant Center has tons of detailed information about how to set this up properly so make sure not to miss out on any important steps!
3. Choose the right categories and keywords for your product to be found on google.
google shopping works on google search engine optimization (SEO) rules so you have to follow the same guidelines that google uses for its regular searches. It’s also important to note that Google has a different list of categories it displays in the image, local, and product flavored searches — make sure your products are classified according to these variations! For example, if one category is missing from your feed, google will show people something like this instead: ‘Sorry we did not find any items. Not good at all! So do yourself a favor and get familiar with google’s detailed taxonomy guide right away. The more accurate information about your products you provide google with by classifying them correctly into correct groups/categories, the better chances of success you will have.
The same goes for keywords — google search considers the exact match, but google shopping shows you all variations of your chosen words (like plurals), so make sure to add them too! For example, if one keyword in your feed is ‘girl’ google may show people this instead: “Sorry we did not find any items.” Don’t let this happen to your products and include both singulars and plurals of each word in optimal order according to google’s standards. Again, Google has a detailed guide on how exactly should you do it right here. Do yourself another favor and read every single detail there thoroughly before starting work on product feeds. It can save you lots of time down the line when something goes wrong with
4. Add photos of your products with captions that are informative, interesting, and engaging.
google shopping is all about visual content, so make sure to use plenty of high-quality photographs which provide the user with enough information on what they are looking for. Google also recommends adding short captions under each photo that give some extra data like brand name or size of an item right below it! Don’t hesitate to include links in your descriptions too — google will automatically hyperlink them back to their respective landing pages on your website/online store, increasing chances of conversions by a lot! You can even choose between different formats for images and text (like rich snippets) according to google’s guidelines here. The more you know.
Don’t forget about call-to-action buttons either as these have been shown through extensive testing done by google to have a direct impact on conversion rates. Make sure you include it in the right place and google will automatically show people something like this when they are looking at your products: ‘Learn more.
5. Be sure to have an email address on each page.
Before google shopping ads were introduced, google search used to show people this kind of result when they were looking for something: “Sorry we did not find any items.” Even though Google has significantly improved since then, showing more products and fewer errors overall, the problem still remains. Lots of times it's just pure bad luck that your product does not get displayed at all! So what can you do? The first step is building a positive reputation — have an email address on every single page of your
website/online store so if anything goes wrong with displaying or ranking one of your products you will immediately be notified about it via email. This way Google knows who should receive notifications in case there are problems with particular feeds which may include issues concerning the quality or other issues google may have with them.
6. Keep prices updated.
google shopping shows real-time prices of every product, so if one goes up or down google will show people this instead: “Sorry we did not find any items.” Don’t let that happen to your business! It’s crucial for google search rankings as well — google gives priority to those websites/online stores who are willing to invest more into advertising on their platform. If you want it all, be prepared to pay more than the average market price because the competition is huge and chances of success are extremely low otherwise.
7. Submit your google shopping feed.
In order to show up on google search, you will have to submit a google shopping feed. This is not an extremely difficult process and can be done by anyone with a good knowledge of how google product feeds work — just follow all instructions that google provides in detail here, read it carefully and never skip any steps! If for some reason you don’t feel like going through the whole tutorial yourself, there are plenty of companies out there who offer this kind of service as well (for a fee). In my opinion, though, learning from someone else’s mistakes is always better than making them yourself so try reading everything thoroughly first before spending more money on hiring people! And if something goes wrong with the third-party software google provides, google will not help you as it’s their policy to leave all third-party providers alone and only work with them on issues they created themselves.
8. google shopping is NOT google adsense .
google shopping has nothing to do with google Adsense — you can’t just assume that they will work together. Google Adwords at this point is completely separate from google shopping and the only thing linking them is their owner, parent company alphabet inc., who recently announced plans of merging them into one product during 2018. This means all existing advertisers on google Adwords have to come up with a new strategy for advertising if they want to continue doing so after merge which doesn’t necessarily mean things won’t be working out fine in the end! Most people expect it will become even easier than before since there’s literally no need for two different platforms anymore once everything gets merged but don’t make any hasty decisions thinking google shopping will be google Adsense v.2017 — google business is always changing and so are their policies, especially when it comes to third-party providers such as Adwords/shopping or google analytics etc.
9. google shopping and google analytics do not work together either!
Many people looking for a change of pace from google AdSense, try to connect google shopping with google analytics as it seems like the logical next step. The only problem is that you can’t have both details in one dashboard — if you want to use google shopping, you will need an entirely separate account on google analytics which will give you access to more information but also require some additional effort. If your business does not generate enough income for this kind of investment, however, there’s no point in even thinking about it because all data provided by google are simply too valuable just to be ignored that easily.
